He topped the list after the 114-year-old Spaniard Francisco Núñez Olivera died earlier this year.

Nonaka’s secret for long life, according to his family, is in his weakness for sweets and warm spring waters long bath.

He was born on July 25, 1905, had seven brothers and a sister,  married in 1931 and had five children.

“He is in a wheelchair, but in good shape”, his granddaughter told the AFP.

Guinness book of records has been searching for the oldest woman since the previous one from Jamaica died last July at the age of 117.

An absolute record still holds Jeanne Louise Calment, a French woman who died in 1997 at the age of 122.
