The Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection is set to ban plastic bags and introduce mandatory payments for biodegradable bags, Belgrade newspaper Politika has said.

Politika was told at the Ministry that Serbia will implement all measures defined in the recently introduced European Strategy for Plastics which limits the use of plastic bags to 90 a year per person to the end of 2019.

“We are in constant communication with the big retail chains and the NGO sector to raise awareness about this issue,” sources at the Ministry said.

According to unofficial estimates by the retail sector, some 20 million Euro are spent each year on plastic bags in Serbia with the population using an average of seven bags a day.
