President Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday that the Serbian military has to be a strong deterrent to possible aggression.
“The Army of Serbia (VS) has to be prepared and it’s up to Serbian politics to preserve the peace and stability and make sure the army is never engaged. But, the military has to be ready to respond to every challenge and deter every aggressor who even thinks about endangering the country,” the president said at a reception to mark VS day.
The president said some 600 million Euro are earmarked for the military annually. “We will set aside more but we will demand results. We will have a better equipped soldier,” Vucic said.
The Army of Serbia (VS) marked its day on Monday with wreath laying ceremonies and a reception following several days of displays of weapons and equipment, military orchestra concerts across the country and an artillery gun salute from Belgrade’s Kalemegdan fortress followed by a Guards drill display on the central Republic Square.
Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin took a delegation to lay a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mt Avala outside Belgrade. The delegation included Chief of Staff General Ljubisa Dikovic and Air Force commander Major General Ranko Zivak.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said in a written message that the country has a strong and modern military which guarantees its stability and progress and contributes to peace in the world in UN and European Union peace missions.
