Dialogue needed to amend Serbian constitution

A Venice Commission delegation told Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic on Thursday that a dialogue between all relevant players is needed to change the constitution and reform the judiciary.

The delegation members said that changes to the Constitution to secure the independence of the judiciary are among the most important reforms recommended by the European Commission, a government press release said.  

The Serbian government submitted draft amendments to the constitution to the Venice Commission in April. The amendments cover the sections of the Constitution regulating the judiciary.  

The delegation said the Venice Commission is prepared to offer legal aid to help Serbia implement European legal and institutional standards in democracy and the rule of law through constitutional changes the judiciary reform.

Brnabic said the constitutional amendments are intended to secure an independent and efficient judiciary. The delegation also met with President Aleksandar Vucic.
