Serbian Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic on Tuesday rejected reports that extra technical safety inspections would be imposed for older cars.

“No one registering their car this year will be forced to undergo a new technical safety check in six months,” Stefanovic told Belgrade’s TV Prva. He said the section of the regulations imposing the additional safety check would not be implemented. The regulations are due to take effect early in July.

According to reports earlier this month, the regulations would force all car owners whose vehicles are older than 15 years to undergo technical safety inspections every six months, instead of once a year at registration as is the case now. According to some estimates the about a million car owners would be affected.
