Only three people survived a crash of a Cubana de Aviacion Boeing 737 with 104 passengers and nine crew members on board, BBC reported.

Oglas

The plane crashed on take-off from Havana's Jose Marti International Airport on Friday, Cuba's state-run television reported.

BBC quoted local media as saying that over a hundred people have died in the crash and that there have been three survivors, all in a critical condition.

The flight was on route to the Cuban city of Holguin and casualties are reported, an airport source told CNN.

A large fireball followed by a towering plume of smoke was visible near the airport on the outskirts of the Cuban capital, witnesses said.

Cubana de Aviacion -- Cuba's national carrier -- has had to ground some of its ageing fleets because of safety issues, though the cause of Friday's crash is unknown, CNN's Patrick Oppmann reported from Havana.
