A court in Kosovo on Thursday sentenced a local doctor to prison and a fine for illegal kidney transplants.

The Basic Court in Pristina sentenced urologist Lutfi Dervishi to seven and a half years in jail, a fine of 8,000 Euro and a two year ban on practicing medicine for performing illegal kidney transplants at his Medikus clinic. The court also sentenced co-defendant Sokol Hajdini to a year in jail.

According to the ruling, Dervishi was sentenced for trafficking human organs while Hajdin was sentenced for inflicting serious bodily harm.

“Dervishi, as owner of the Medikus clinic and through his personal participation in surgery, knew that the Medicus clinic did not have a permit to perform transplants and with full knowledge that those transplants were illegal he recruited at least seven persons with the aim of using their kidneys for transplants,” the court said in its ruling.
