Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic named the current Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali as her choice for a new country’s finance minister, a news agency reported.

State Tanjug news agency said Brnabic’s suggestion landed into the Parliament.

Mali has been a controversial political figure, suspected of failing to declare his properties and bank accounts. Those suspicions never made to a court, and he got custody of children from a marriage during which he had beaten his wife, according to her testimony.

He was also in the centre of the Savamala affair when masked men demolished several objects in central Belgrade at night, grabbing people’s mobile phone and mistreating them.

Police did not answer citizens’ call, and the event triggered massive protests demanding Mali’s resignation.

Mali is to replace Dusan Vujovic who resigned from the post citing personal reasons.
