An opposition party warned that a wall on the bank of the Ibar River in the divided town of Mitrovica suggested “the unacceptable division of Kosovo," while Pristina’s authorities said it was a part of a pedestrian zone financed by the European Union, the Zeri daily reported on Tuesday.
Kosovo's opposition Self-Determination party described the building of the wall as “frightening.”
Zeri quoted Pristina’s Ministry of Environmental Protection as saying that the construction of the 70-centimetre high wall was going as planned and in an agreement with the Serb local authorities in northern Mitrovica and the central Pristina government.
The Belgrade – Pristina dialogue, involving the presidents of Serbia and Kosovo, Aleksandar Vucic and Hashim Thaci respectively, continues in Brussels on Wednesday under the EU auspices.
The latest round of talks in June produced no agreement, and both leaders said they had not been optimistic.
The option of Kosovo’s division is officially off the table since Pristina made it clear it would not accept that, insisting on Belgrade’s full recognition of Kosovo’s independence. Serbia’s authorities maintain they will never allow that.
The dialogue should lead to a legally binding agreement on normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina which in turn would accelerate Serbia’s negotiations on the EU membership and eventually open the bloc’s door to Kosovo as well.
