West Nile Virus kills Three in Serbia

Three people have died in Serbia after contracting the West Nile virus by July 24, 2018, the Beta news agency said on Wednesday citing a report from the Serbian Public Health Institute.

A total of 41 cases of the West Nile fever have been registered in the country, the Institute report said.  

According to the report, the virus was contracted by both men and women aged between 31 and 84, with most of the cases reported in Vojvodina.  

The West Nile fever is caused by a virus which is carried by mosquitos. The report said that the Public Health Institute monitors the mosquito population in 11 cities across the country.

The report warned that about 80 percent of the people infected with the virus show no symptoms while the rest show symptoms similar to the flu with a high fever, headaches and muscle and joint pain. Less than 1 percent develop meningitis and encephalitis, the report added.  

The Serbian Public Health Institute report added that 19 cases of West Nile fever were reported in the European Union by July 19, 2018, and specified that 12 cases were reported in Greece, 4 in Italy, 2 in Romania and 1 in Hungary.
