Just one fourth of the real estate in Serbia is owned by women and another 11 percent are mixed male-female property, according to figures released on Friday by the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED).
NALED warned that this is one more example of the fact that women are not in an equal position to men in Serbian society, adding that women are also less paid and have less opportunity for advancement in their careers.
A total of 43.7 percent of women are employed compared to 56 percent of men with 71 percent of men in managerial jobs. Of the 250 members of parliament, 87 are women. Just 11 of the 166 municipalities, town and cities have a woman mayor or municipality chief and there are only 5 women in the 22 member Serbian government.
NALED data shows that women account for more than half of Serbia’s rural population with three out of four women not getting paid for the work they do.
