The US Embassy in Pristina said on Friday Washington would continue to support the Kosovo Security Forces (BSK) after the three new laws regulating “a disciplined and transparent transformation” into an army were adopted in principle by Pristina's parliament, the Beta news agency reported.

The Embassy demanded from Kosovo’s leaders to guarantee that the transformation process would include and represent all minorities.

“The United States will continue to support the disciplined and transparent transition into a professional multi-ethnic army which will correlate with NATO force and will have a limited mandate for the territorial self-defence,” the Embassy told the Pristina-based Gazeta Express website.

It added that the US encouraged Kosovo’s leaders to continue the process in “a comprehensive and prudent manner” which would represent all Kosovo’s citizens and would closely coordinate with NATO.”

The main Kosovo Serb political organisation, the Serb List, supported by Belgrade, opposes the transformation as do Serbia's leaders, saying that Kosovo’s army is “a threat to the Serbs.”
