Serbia’s Labour Minister Zoran Djordjevic on Tuesday called employers to abide by all workplace safety and health care measures defined by law.

Djordjevic’s appeal to employers comes after several fatal and near fatal accidents on construction sites over the past several months.

Speaking at conference on the danger of exposure to hazardous substances, the minister warned employers to take his appeal seriously, adding that a single worker is too valuable to be allowed to die accidentally because of inadequate workplace safety.

“The Serbian government is determined to fully investigate every case of negligence and lack of security for employees and make an example of whoever is guilty,” Djordjevic said, adding that there can be no excuse for lax workplace security.

“The people who disregard workplace safety and the health of their employees will put their own position and survival in jeopardy,” the minister said.

The minister also warned that part of the workforce was leaving the country.
