The number of people killed in traffic accidents has dropped by 11 percent thanks to changes to the law on traffic safety, Serbian Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the National Drivers’s Academy (NAVAK) training centre, the minister cited the good results of the free courses for young drivers organized by that private organization. “Young drivers who have completed training at NAVAK have not caused a single lethal traffic accident in the five years since the ministry has been a partner in the project,” he is quoted as saying in a ministry press release.
He called all drivers “to take care on the roads, not drink, buckle up, slow down, not drive cars which are not in good repair and make sure they are rested because that is the only way to save their own and the lives of others”.
NAVAK spokesman Mladen Alvirovic said that 7,000 young drivers have completed the free courses since the project was launched in 2014.
