The Serbian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency is going to install radon gas detectors in 2,500 schools and kindergartens across the country, Belgrade daily Blic reported on Thursday.
The first detectors will be installed within the next month and will be collected in six months, the newspaper said, adding that they will be sent to a laboratory in Sweden for analysis.
Radon is colourless, odourless gas which can cause health problems if inhaled in large quantities. Radon is present in small amounts in open spaces but can accumulate to dangerous levels in closed spaces. According to an agency statement, radon is the second greatest cause of lung cancer
Agency chief Sladajan Velinov said that the detectors will be installed in other public facilities, adding that the people living in old houses in rural communities are most at risk of radon poisoning.
The agency said on its web site that the detectors are being installed as part of European Radon Day.
