Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister Fatmir Limaj on Thursday announced the possible seizure of Serbian car licence plates while the media reported that the police was already seizing them from cars registered in Serbia.
He said drivers from Serbia would have to be issued temporary plates for their stay in Kosovo.
The media in Pristina reported that the Kosovo police seized Serbian licence plates in raids on the Serb-populated villages of Ranilug and Veliko Ropotovo.
According to those reports, plain clothes police officers are stopping cars with Serbian licence plates, giving drivers traffic tickets and ordering them to appear before a misdemeanour judge.
Kosovo Police spokesman Daut Hoxha denied media reports that the police had seized Serbian licence plates. “That information is pure speculation at this time,” Hoxha said.
The Kosovo state TV (RTK) reported that Ranilug police station commander Nebojsa Popovic also denied reports of licence plates being seized.
