Kosovo Serbs protest import tariffs' increase and arrest

Local Serbs staged protests in several parts of northern Kosovo, over Pristina decision to increase import taxes for goods from Serbia to 100 percent, but also against the Pristina special ROSU unit’s arrests early in the day, the Beta news agency reported.

The protest over tariffs’ increase was scheduled on Thursday, but early on Friday,Kosovo’s special ROSU police unit entered northern Kosovo and apprehended four Serbs suspected of involvement in the assassination of a Serb politician on January 16.

 The protests ended peacefully.

The demonstrators carried banners reading “EU open your eyes,” “Don’t starve our children,” “We won’t go into ghettos,” and alike.

The mayor of the Serb-controlled part of Mitrovica Goran Rakic asked the protesters not to fall for Pristina’s provocations, because “that’s what Pristina wants.”

The head of the Zubin Potok municipality Stevan Vulovic said a large number of Serbs gathered to show to Pristina’s authorities they were ready to talk in a civilised manner.
