The Belgrade Higher Court said its Department for War Crimes sentenced Ranka Tomic, a member of a female unit of the then Republika Srpska Army (VRS), to five years in jail for a war crime during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Beta news agency reported on Monday.

Tomic was found guilty of “torturing, injuring and taking part in the killing of war prisoner Karmena Kamencic, a nurse with the Fifth Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” together with other members of the Front in the northwestern Bosnian town of Bosanska Krupa in mid-July 1992.

There was no information about who the other members of the Front were nor what had happened to them.

In its closing argument, the prosecution demanded seven years of imprisonment.

Both Tomic and the prosecutor can appeal to the Appellant Court within 15 days of receiving the verdict.
