Kosovo President Hashim Thaci told the Voice of America that Belgrade and Pristina cannot reach a final agreement without defining their borders.

According to Thaci, the borders of Kosovo and Serbia will be defined by the two countries’ professional teams, including international community representatives and representatives of the US, NATO and the EU and there will be no ethnic borders.

“Relations between Kosovo and Serbia are always complicated and sometimes tense. Look at this latest situation. I believe that we will find a way to get past this situation in cooperation with the US and European Union,” Thaci said commenting calls to revoke the decision to impose 100 percent tariffs on goods from Serbia.

Speaking about his meetings with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security advisor John Bolton, Thaci said they both told him clearly that the time is right to reach a comprehensive agreement with Serbia. “They said everyone in Kosovo and Serbia should make maximum use of this moment under EU auspices and with the strong support of the US to achieve a peace agreement between two independent and sovereign states. What I can say is that the US strongly support the dialogue process and the possibility of a final agreement,” he said.

He said the process of reaching a peace agreement between Kosovo and Serbia is in the final stages and added that he wants to achieve mutual recognition which will create an opportunity to change UN Security Council resolution 1244 and lead to membership in the UN.
