Pristina surprised with Mogherini’s emotions, says tariff may stay for long

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj has announced on Thursday the 100 percent import tariffs on goods from Serbia will remain for a long time, i.e., until Belgrade recognises the independence of its former province and until the two sides reach a comprehensive agreement, N1 reported.

A statement from his office said the cabinet was surprised with an engagement and emotions which the European Union diplomacy chief Federica Mogherini showed in protecting the interests of the Serbs, asking Kosovo to annul the import tariffs.

“To some, the decision looks like a daily calculation. No one should think that. The decision will last for a very long time, it will last until Serbia recognises Kosovo,” Haradinaj said at the first convention of Kosovo’s producers.

He added the measure “will remain in force until an overall agreement (with Belgrade) is reached to include the recognition and Kosovo’s UN membership.”

“This measure does not aim at Kosovo’s Serbs. We have already heard Belgrade’s propaganda about the north being without the oxygen, medicines, and kindergartens without milk. Our interest is not to allow that to happen,” Haradinaj said.

He added that no one could say exactly for how long the import tariffs would last, but that he was sure the pressure would become stronger (on Pristina to withdraw the measure).

“I’m afraid this measure eventually goes in favour of those who advocate the definition of borders with Serbia. The last events make such scenarios possible. I see them as dangerous; they will not bring the stability to the Western Balkans,” Haradinaj said.

He has been at odds with Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci who heads Pristina delegation in the dialogue with Belgrade and is in favour of the so-called border correction between the two sides.

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic also said he would like to see the separation from the Albanians.
