Speaking at the opening of the conference in Istanbul, Svilanovic said other security priorities in the region included migrations, organised crime and the control of light weaponry.

“Internet is the main tool used by the terrorist organisations in recruiting and training new members,” he said.

Svilanovic also said that the European Union offered “unmeasurable support to strengthening the security cooperation in South-East Europe in 2018.”

“Both the EU and Western Balkans Summit in Sofia and London Summit within the Berlin process stressed the importance of the security cooperation between the bloc and regional countries,” he added.

The participants in the conference include governments’ officials and representatives of the international and regional organisations and initiatives.

The gathering’s agenda covers issues related to fighting cybercrime, regional links in reducing violent extremism and a sustainable solution to prevent illegal possession and abuse of small calibre and light arms (SALW).
