Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has won his seventh Australian Open title, beating Spain’s Rafael Nadal on Sunday after a two-hour game with the results 6:3, 6:2, 6:3.
By winning the title once again, Djokovic has surpassed Roger Federer and Roy Emerson, becoming the most successful Grand Slam player.
This is Djokovic’s 15th title in his entire career, with which he has surpassed Pit Sampras and secured the third position in the all-time rankings behind Nadal, who won 17 titles, and Federer, who won 20.
“I would like to return compliments to Rafi (Nadal) on everything he has achieved over the past two weeks. This match was difficult, but you just came back after an injury that distanced you from the field since September,” Djokovic said, addressing Nadal after the ceremony where he was awarded the trophy.
“You showed me, my colleagues and younger players what the definition of competitiveness is and thank you for that,” he said.
“I apologise, I am trying to figure out what is happening. 12 months ago I had surgery, and now I am standing here with a trophy. I am a champion of four Grand Slams and that is unbelievable,” Djokovic said, adding that he is “speechless.”
Nadal congratulated Djokovic and his team, saying he “showed an unbelievable level of tennis on this evening and throughout the week.”
