Slovenian president says Serbia’s negotiations with EU could slow down

Pahor said that the countries of the region should not expect any great desire to bring in new members which he said is why unconditional cooperation with the European Commission in resolving all open questions.  

He said he had been warning for some time that the EU could turn to resolving its internal problems and not focus on expansion.  

“That is why we have to do everything to resolve coflict peacefully. There is no historic necessity for the Western Balkans to find itself invoved in a conflict in every complicated situation but if something like that does happen and this part of Europe does get involved in a conflict it would be a complete storm and we all want peace and a safe future for our children,” he said.  

According to Pahor, Slovenia appreciates Serbia’s right to choose its own security policy and its priority of cooperating with Russia. “Slovenia supports all of the efforts by Belgrade and Pristina to reach an agreement but both sides have to respect agreements. We stress that the basic condition to resolve the most sensitive bilateral issues is for the negotiations to be free of coercion and with no colateral security threats in the region,” he said.
