Belgrade to compete for European Green Capital title in 2019, City Mayor says

Serbia’s capital Mayor said on Tuesday Belgrade would join the race for the European Green Capital title this year and that Ljubljana would help with its experience, the Beta news agency reported.
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, won the competition organised since 2010 for the most advanced cities in the environmental protection, three years ago, as the only capital with that title in this part of Europe.
After meeting with Ljubljana’s Mayor Zoran Jankovic, Zoran Radojicic said the friendship of the two cities, both part of a joint country until 1991, was long-lasting and that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his colleague and achieve “many of his goals.”
“We can learn a lot from Ljubljana’s experience. We discussed the transport, communal waste, and other issues,” Radojicic said.
Jankovic added that comparing the public issues the two cities were facing was not possible due to the difference in their size. Belgrade’s population is almost two million, while Ljubljana is home to some 280,000 people.
Ljubljana's Mayor said the cooperation between Slovenia and Serbia was good and that Ljubljana and Belgrade were twin cities.
He added that after being declared the European Green Capital in 2016, Ljubljana became more interesting to investors.
“I’m glad Belgrade will apply for the title," Jankovic said.
