An ambulance service in northern Serbia's town of Novi Becej has had its phones cut off because of unpaid bills, the Vojvodina Research-Analytical Centre (VOICE) reported on Wednesday, but the number was activated later in the day, N1 said.
The medical emergency number 194 was back in use after more than 24 hours of being disconnected.
Voice said the emergency medical services staff used their social network account profiles to inform the public in Novi Becej and the surrounding area in central Vojvodina that they were using a temporary mobile phone number.
The ambulance service number was cut off on Tuesday afternoon. Staff said the Novi Becej medical centre phones had been cut off earlier, but the 194 number had always been left operational. They said their ambulance service covers the largest territory of any medical centre in Vojvodina, servicing Novi Becej and the entire area between the towns of Kikinda and Zrenjanin.
The staff said the medical centre management knew the phones would be cut off but did nothing to prevent it.
The Novi Becej medical centre’s accounts have been blocked for more than a year because of a debt of 122 million Dinars (1 Euro – 118 Dinars), most of it for medical supplies.
The 194 number is reserved for emergency medical services everywhere in Serbia.
