Brnabic says threats against N1 impermissible

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Wednesday the threats made against N1 TV are impermissible.

“What happened is impermissible and is the red line that cannot be crossed,” she said when asked why her government did not react to the threats made on Monday.

N1 received letter from an alleged member of a Serbian war veterans’ organization threatening to blow up its building and harm its journalists on Monday. The police arrested a man suspected of having written the letter a day later.

She recalled that the Internal Affairs Ministry reacted almost immediately along with the Information Ministry. “I am glad that the person making the threats has already been arrested. That is more significant than any verbal condemnation but if you need any condemnation you have it. I repeat – that is impermissible,” she said.

Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic also condemned the threats against N1 staff and their families. Mihajlovic, senior official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), said the threats are impermissible in a civilized and democratic society, adding that it’s important to send the message that threats of violence are not permissible.

The threats came after senior SNS official Milenko Jovanov accused N1 of recognizing Kosovo, unleashing a wave of offensive and discriminatory statements on social media.
