Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar said that outbreaks of the flu had been reported in Pirot in the south of the country and Uzice in the west and warned that he expects outbreaks in more places.

“A total of 68,516 cases of flu-like symptoms have been reported in Serbia which is 10 percent more than last year and visits to hospitals and maternity wards have been banned,” Loncar said.

The minister said that six people had died of complications linked to the flu.

According to Loncar, the number of people who contracted the flu and died is much higher in the rest of Europe and across the world than in Serbia, adding that between 70,000 and 80,000 people died of the flu in the United States last year.

More people have been vaccinated against the flu in Serbia this year than in the past 10 years which is why there are less flu cases and related deaths compared to neighbouring countries, the health minister said.
