Nothing will be the same since the international community now has an unavoidable and legitimate interlocutor in the Alliance for Serbia (SzS), the leader of Serbia's opposition People’s Party and the chairman of the grouping said in Brussels, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday.
The SzS became a player in Serbia and abroad, Jeremic said, following the opposition consent on the “Agreement with the People” which came out from the anti-government protests across Serbia.
“Lights are finally on in Serbia, and the authorities won’t be able to distort the facts in their international appearances. The Freedom House report saying Serbia was not a free country comes as no surprise to anyone at home, but it won’t be long before the whole world becomes aware of that fact,” Jeremic told the agency.
Jeremic, former Serbia’s Foreign Minister and ex-Chairman of the UN General assembly, and Dragan Djilas, former Mayor of Belgrade and one of the SzS founders, took part at the “Process of Serbia’s European Integration” discussion organised by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) at the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels.
The two are set to meet David McAllister, the EP’s Rapporteur for Serbia.
“We presented our stands to the EP today, and we’ll continue with diplomatic activities on both sides of the Ocean. Our immediate goal is to inform the international public and all relevant players about the worrying situation in Serbia and the region and to show them the Agreement with the People,“ Jeremic said.
He added that the joint peaceful struggle by the opposition and citizens for freedom and the restoration of democracy would not be either smooth or straightforward, but that there was no doubt it would be successful.
