More than a million migrants have been registered in Serbia since the crisis began, Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Wednesday at Budapest Process ministerial conference in Istanbul.

A ministry press release quoted him as saying that the Serbian government reacted responsibly to maintain the security of its citizens and respect the basic human rights of the migrants, providing them with the necessary medical care and accomodation.

“At this moment, some 4,000 migrants are housed in 14 permanent or temporary centres in Serbia. We are continuously working to improve and reinforce the migrations and asylum systems,” he said and recalled that the government introduced news laws on asylum, foreigners, migrations and border control.

Stefanovic warned of an increase in the trafficking and smuggling of human beings. “The Serbian police managed to prevent 162 people from smuggling human beings in 2018 as well as stopping the illegal crossing of the border by 7,032 people and have prevented similar attempts by more than 1,000 migrants this year,” the minister said.
