Serbian Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin said that he had volunteered to undergo the 15 day military training for reserve forces announced by the ministry.

A ministry statement said last week that adults of military age who had not done military service would be called up for basic training. Serbian suspended mandatory military service several years ago. The minister said some 200,000 young men had done no military or civilian service since then.

Vulin told the Serbian state TV (RTS) that he would be one of the reserves undergoing 15-day training after he passes medical exams.

“If I can go, why can’t anyone else,” Vulin said commenting the call up papers which were sent out to military age citizens of Serbia who had not done any military service. He said that there is no justification to not serving your country.

According to the minister, the fine for not responding to the call up is 50,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 118 Dinars). “We started this last year and we want to do training for 600 men over the age of 30 who did not do military or civilian service,” Vulin said.
