Following the personal information watchdog’s claims that airing of the footage of a young wan who was under arrest was against the Law on the Protection of Personal Information, Serbia’s Interior Ministry reacted, on Saturday, saying it was in the public interest to air the security camera footage in order to show the facts concerning the case.

"The speed with which Commissioner Zlatko Petrovic, from the Information Commissioner’s Office, reacted, in an attempt to spin the story towards the violation of the Law on the Protection of Personal Information, is interesting. It comes at a time when the public is interested to know the truth about shameful and false accusations at the expense of the police conduct,” head of the Ministry’s Human Resources Department Katarina Tomasevic, said.

She added that the Commissioner is playing the role of a judge, judging in the security footage case, which was never initiated in the first place.

Earlier, Zlatko Petrovic, from the Office of the Information Commissioner, said that one could conclude that the footage came from a security camera from the Interior Ministry’s detention room, which is used for the protection of detainees and it should not have been aired anywhere – which was the case.

“In other words, this was a classic attempt of unauthorised processing of personal information, meaning a violation of the Law on the Protection of Personal Information," Petrovic said.
