Serbian justice minister tells EU officials progress has been made

She told officials of the European Commission Directorate for Expansion, Alan Johnson and David Hudson about what had been achieved in the fight against corruption and Serbia’s progress on chapter 23 in the pre-accession negotiations.  

Kuburovic said that a reorganization of courts and the prosecution had been implemented in the past year, including setting up four new regional centers to combat organized crime and corruption, a ministry press release said.  

She said the goal is to lessen opportunities for corruption and added that the introduction of e-auctions and electronic public procurement are the kind of prevention measures the government is working on.  

The minister said new measures would introduced in the review of the action plan for chapter 23. She praised the Organized Crime Prosecution for efforts to combat money laundering.  

The European Commission officials are quoted as saying that they appreciate the efforts and the progress Serbia has made in combating corruption but added that a lot still has to be done, especially in terms of prevention.
