The editor of a fake news watchdog portal warned that Serbian media are announcing wars at least twice a week.

“Wars are being announced by Serbian media every third day and those are the most dangerous lies,” Fejk Njuz Tragac (fake news tracker) portal editor Stefan Janjic told the Belgrade-based FoNet news agency and added that the tabloid press leads the field in that regard.

“Informer, Alo and Kurir are the top three. Those are the most popular daily newspapers in Serbia with very high circulation,” he said.

According to research done by the portal, “Serbia is at war with all of its neighbors, except Romania”. “We are primarily at war with the Albanians and Croatians, those are our fiercest enemies,” he said.

Janjic said that fake news based on nationalism and those aimed at creating negative feelings towards neighboring people are especially dangerous.

He said the readers of the tabloids are not ready to punish their manipulation despite the warnings from the Press Council and their circulations are not dropping.  Janjic said that they publish what he called “the type of lies which are pleasing”. “It’s pleasing to hear that Serbia is expecting economic well-being in the future or that a million MiGs are coming from Russia,” he said.

He warned that people are not in the habit of checking media content but blindly believe what they read.
