Serbians are driving cars which are of an average age of more than 17 years, Belgrade University School of Traffic Engineering Dean Nebojsa Bojovic told N1 on Tuesday.

He said the school had done research which showed that the average age of cars in the country is 17.1 years and would continue rising.

Commenting Environment Protection Minister Goran Trivan’s recent statement that a law would be introduced to ban imports of cars over the age of 10 along with subsidies for the purchase of hybrid and electric vehicles, Bojovic said that is important for the country’s integration into the European Union. “The rise in the number of vehicles increases pollution and we should look to replace them as soon as possible,” he said.

Bojovic said that only way to bring in large numbers of electric cars is through a policy of subsidies.
