Serbian police fail to provide information to prosecutors

Serbian prosecutors told Radio Free Europe on Wednesday that they are still waiting for the police to provide information on the people who tore down houses in the Savamala neighbourhood three years ago.

The latest request to the police was sent by the First Basic Public Prosecution in Belgrade in January, Deputy Prosecutor Aleksandar Djenadic said.

“We have sent requests to the police four times to date and have received nothing,” she said, adding that the perpetrators can’t be prosecuted without information from the police.

Houses were torn down illegally in the central Belgrade neighbourhood on the night of April 24-25, 2016 hours after polling stations closed after parliamentary elections. Masked men used construction machinery to tear down houses after taking security guards prisoner. The police refused to react to calls from local residents.

The only indictment raised to date is against the police duty officer for dereliction of duty.
