Serbia’s top police officer denied on Monday that the traffic video surveillance system deployed across Belgrade could be misused.

“The system is protected and can’t be misused primarily because it can’t be accessed through the Internet. Only staff from the Internal Affairs Ministry will have access and if any of them gain unauthorized access an alarm will be activated,” Police Director Vladimir Rebic told the Serbian state TV (RTS).

He said cameras and other equipment were being deployed to monitor traffic in the Serbian capital “to have a preventative effect on the population who will know that they will be found more easily and efficiently”. The video surveillance system will be completed by the end of 2020 with cameras at 800 sites.

Rebic also said that 2018 was the year with the least crimes since the start of the century. “We recorded a drop in robberies of 15 percent and in domestic crime of 17 percent,” he said.
