Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci told Radio Free Europe (RFE) the “racist language Serbia’s Prime Minister “ Ana Brnabic used was the best proof of “Belgrade’s current regime pathological hatred of Kosovo people,” and added he expected the European Union to distance itself from such words and condemn them, the FoNet news agency reported on Thursday.
Speaking at a news conference alongside the EU ambassador to Serbia Sem Fabrizi on Wednesday, Brnabic said she was worried and scared by the situation in Kosovo because “you have to deal with people who literally walked out of the woods.”
Earlier, Kosovo's Foreign Minister Behgjet Pacollialso reacted to Brnabic's words, describing them as racist.
Brnabic on Thursday repeated the words, explaining that she was reffering to some top officials in Kosovo who wore uniforms during the 1989-1999 was and did came out of the woods. She added Pacolli was not one of them and that she was surprised he recognised himself in her words.
Thaci said that “this is nothing new to us because we are aware of a genocidal character of the previous and current Serbia. But what is different and disappointing is a bitter fact that the EU doesn’t condemn Serbia’s racist and anti-European behaviour.”
He added that on the contrary, the EU was still holding “open door to a country which committed genocide and even today doesn’t believe in the European values.”
“On the other hand, the EU continues to discriminate the Kosovars and keep them isolated without a chance of joining the bloc. Such a selective and discriminating approach jeopardises the EU credibility among people in Kosovo,” Thaci told RFE.
He added he expected the EU to “condemn and distance itself from such Serbian officials’ racist vocabulary which instigates hatred and minimise efforts for reconciliation and normalisation.”
