German envoy: Serbia's Parliament should give more time to opposition

The German ambassador to Serbia Thomas Schieb said on Friday the role of the country's parliament during debates could be better if the opposition had more time for discussion, the Beta news agency reported.

He added the parliament should play "significant role" in political life," and that he hoped "for constructive debates, especially about the judiciary ."

"We believe the parliament's role can be empowered and better in debating and giving the opposition, which is boycotting the sessions, a chance," Schieb told Beta commenting on official Belgrade's remarks about the parts of the European Commission's (EC) report on the country's progress towards the European Union.

The ambassador said the EC report was "a comprehensive and balanced" and that it represented necessary instruments and guidelines for the continuation of reforms.

"EC put a lot of effort into the report, and it contains criticism as well as positive elements, realises the progress in the economic sphere," Schieb said.

He added it was important that the work on Serbia's European path continued "in a positive and constructive spirit."
