Opposition leader says a new metro construction plan is 'crime against citizens'

Speaking at a press conference, Djilas said it would be absurd for the metro to connect inhabited parts of the city or to construct it near the river, as current project design stipulates.

According to him, the point of the metro was to have it pass through most inhabited neighbourhoods.

“The metro project of this government is based on covering the Belgrade Waterfront (a government-supported project). Metro is constructed where people live, and not at Makis or Ada Huja where nobody lives,” said the politician.

He cited experts who estimated seven years ago the metro costs would amount to 2.2 billion Euro, while these costs today are estimated to 4.4 billion Euro. Djilas also recalled that the City Assembly unanimously adopted a document in 2010, which says how would the Belgrade metro look like.
