Zoran Pasalic, Serbia’s Ombudsman, said on Wednesday, on the occasion of the International Day of Pride, that there was some progress in protecting the rights of the LGBT population in the country, but that they and those who advocated their rights, still did not feel safe, the Beta news agency reported.

He said it was necessary to legally regulate same-sex partnership and legal consequences of sex change, to provide education about the LGBT position and rights and to eliminate the prejudices and stereotypes.

Special attention, Pasalic added, should be focused on young LGBT persons who were homeless after families had rejected them.

“They are exposed to violence and molestation. Due to strong prejudices and stereotypes about persons of different sexual orientation and gender identity, they are subject of discrimination and the hate speech,” Pasalic said in a statement.
