More people have died in traffic accidents on Serbian roads in June this year than in the same month of 2018, the traffic police said on Tuesday.
The death toll on Serbian roads reached 54 in June, which is 12 more deaths in traffic accidents than in June 2018. The police said the main cause of the tragedies are speeding, intoxication and failure to fasten seat belts.
“The number of pedestrians and motorcycle riders killed increases from year to year in the summer months. Fines are not low. Alcohol, speeding and violent driving all draw prison sentences but we still have a high number of traffic violations,” Traffic Police Chief Nebojsa Arsov said.
The traffic police believe that the only way to reduce the number of casualties in traffic accidents is to launch campaigns constantly while the Traffic Safety Agency recalled that the number of traffic deaths has dropped since it launched the Drive Rested campaign in the summer of 2016 from 131 that year to 109 last year.
