Control of river traffic stepped up in Serbia

The Serbian Traffic Ministry said on Thursday that it would step up control of vessels on the country’s rivers over the summer to raise security levels.

Assistant Minister for river traffic Veljko Kovacevic said that inspectors filed charges against people sailing on rivers on more than 100 occasions.  

He said that the most frequent violations of the law included sailing a boat without a permit and not having the necessary equipment on board.  

According to the Belgrade Port Authority, there are 3,800 small boats registered in the Serbian capital.
