Serbia’s and Bulgaria’s prime ministers Ana Brnabic and Bojko Borisov said on Tuesday the two countries patched up relations after a misunderstanding regarding some statements, media reported on Tuesday.
The two met during the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) Summit in Bosnia and said they “put an end to that story.”
Borisov said earlier that the new European Union Foreign Policy Commissioner Josep Borrell, a Spaniard, should follow the bloc’s policy on Kosovo, and not that of his country which did not recognise its independence.
Spain is among five out of 28 EU member states that do not recognise Kosovo's independence.
Serbia’s Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic reacted angrily, telling Borisov “to respect the EU position on Kosovo's independence and not to teach Josep Borrell a lesson. "
Serbia’s ambassador to Sofia was first summoned to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry after the statement, but Borisov said there was no need for that.
Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia’s President, said in the meantime that it was a temporary glitch in the two countries’ relations, and Brnabic added on Tuesday Bulgaria was Serbia’s important partner.
“No need for tensions and strained relations. We have a lot of joint projects and we should continue in that direction,” she said.
Borisov said that Dacic “attacked me for no reason,” because of his stand toward Kosovo.
“We have problems with Turkey but we meet regularly. If we cannot agree let us first quarrel and then agree,” Borisov said.
