The Serbian traffic police appealed to drivers to take greater care in traffic following a large number of traffic accidents over the weekend.

“Nine people lost their lives and 100 others were injured in traffic accidents across Serbia over the weekend. According to initial assessments the most frequent causes of the accidents were excessive speed, irregular passing of other vehicles with a large number of people not using safety belts,” Traffic Police Department spokesman Aleksandar Radenkovic said.

He said that the traffic police has stepped up its control of traffic over the summer and would continue to do so in future.

“The Traffic Police Department is appealing once more to all participants in traffic to follow regulations on speed limits, use safety belts in both front and back seats and start their journeys only if they are rested and take a break every two hours,” he said.
