Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin said on Tuesday that Serbia’s policy of military neutrality means that the country takes its own decisions to procure weapons where it sees fit.

He told the Serbian state TV (RTS) that the country is arming itself only for the sake of peace. “Serbia is not a terrorist territory, we are a serious, respected country which has the right to arm itself,” Vulin said commenting a NATO statement on the donation of Russian armored vehicles to Serbia.

“We are only doing this for the sake of peace because the stronger we are the farther away war is. A strong Serbia is a guarantee that the Balkans will be at peace,” the Defense Minister said.

He said that the donated Russian BRDM 2 armored vehicles can protect personnel and make the Army of Serbia (VS) stronger and better equipped and make missions safer. Vulin said that four Mi-35 and Mi-17 helicopters are due to arrive from Russia by the end of the year or early next year.
