Representatives of the authorities and opposition have been invited to meet for a second time on Friday, august 9 to discuss the financing of election campaigns, the Open Society Foundation and Belgrade University Faculty of Political Science (FPN) said on Wednesday.
The first meeting was at the FPN on July 30 with no prior warning to the media because the organizers insisted that participants should not disclose what they said at gathering. Both the authorities and opposition insisted after the first meeting that it was not part of negotiations on election conditions. Friday’s meeting, which is scheduled to start at 09:00 am, will also be held under Chatham House rules behind closed doors but this time with statements to the media afterwards.
A press release said that the meeting will focus on campaign financing, primarily on improving control of finances with attention devoted to the use of public resources in election campaigns, campaigning by officials and transparency, as well as problems which can be resolved in the short term. A proposal of solutions to problems to be resolved after elections will be made at the meeting.
The meeting will be opened by FPN Dean Dragan Simic and Open Society Foundation Executive Director Milan Antonijevic. Spokespeople for the CRTA and CeSID election watchdos and Transparency Serbia will present their expert analyses of campaign financing.
The FPN and Open Society Foundation are planning to organize a series of round tables on the parliamentary and local elections which will be held by the spring of 2020 at the latest.
