The Patriarch is at the Military Medical Academy (VMA) which is considered to be the best medical facility in the country. Senior public officials from all walks of life are taken to that hospital for treatment.

Blic newspaper reported on its web site that Irinej was in stable condition. “He had a fever and was generally weak. The situation is stable and we are hoping for a quick recovery,” an unnamed source told the daily adding that the Patriarch would remain in hospital for a few more days.

Politika daily said that it was told unofficially by church sources that Irinej had contracted a virus and denied reports that he was in serious condition.

The Serbian President’s cabinet confirmed that President Aleksandar Vucic visited the Patriarch in hospital.

The Patriarch celebrated his 89th birthday earlier this week.
