The Radio Belgrade first programme crew was detained by Kosovo police in the southern Mitrovica on Friday and spent six hours in custody without an explanation according to the state Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) as quoted by the Beta news agency.

The police, RTS said, stopped the crew’s official car and searched it thoroughly.

“Men from the crew were also thoroughly searched like criminals, with arms on the car and spread legs. Then the whole crew was taken to south Mitrovica police station for interrogation where their mobile phones were confiscated,” RTS said.

The police released them after six hours and instructed them to go back to northern Mitrovica saying it was not safe to continue to Gracanica in the central Kosovo where they initially headed.

RTS added that the police treated the crew correctly while in detention.

Kosovo’s early general elections are due on Sunday and they attract a lot of media attention since observers say the results are unpredictable.
