The Serbia Against the Death Penalty NGO publishes the results of a poll on views about the death sentence for the worst crimes.

This year’s poll showed that 58 percent of the population of Serbia is in favor of the death penalty, 25 percent are opposed and 17 percent are undecided which is a slight rise over last year’s poll when 56 percent said they want the death penalty reinstated while 24 percent were opposed and 20 percent undecided.

According to the poll results, 65 percent of supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would support the reinstatement of the death penalty, 20 percent are opposed and 16 percent are undecided.

The percentage of Serbians in favor of reinstating the death penalty has been rising since 2007 when just over 30 percent support the death penalty. Serbia abolished the death penalty in 2002.
