Serbian opposition Party of Freedom and Justice leader Dragan Djilas warned of “huge fear” among Serbians as reflected in the case of the whistleblower who revealed the involvement of a cabinet minister’s father in the arms trade.
An employee of the Krusik munitions plant was arrested for leaking a document which showed that Branko Stefanovic, father of Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, was involved in the sale of munitions produced at the plant which the Arms Watch portal said were ending up in the hands of Islamic extremists in Yemen.
“When the Alliance for Serbia (SzS) learned of the arrest and wanted to organize a protest and call a news conference, the family asked us not to because they are afraid it could do more damage than good,” he said in a live appearance on the Impression of the Week (Utisak Nedelje) talk show on Nova S TV on Sunday night.
He said that the arrest of the Krusik employee who drew attention to alleged corruption involving the minister’s father is proof that Serbia “is a Mafia state which has been privatized by a group of people who refrain from nothing to remain in power”. “Instead of investigating Nebojsa Stefanovic’s fatther and the minister who , they are looking into this man… The people who did this are suffering no consequences,” Djilas said.
He added that 80 percent of Serbians have no idea that the Krusik employee is in jail and the elder Stefanovic is involved because the media with national frequencies have not reported the case.
